WHAT CANOPY SHOULD YOU BUY?
Buyer’s Guide: Why Your Canopy Choice Matters More Than You Might Think
Most people understand that when building a house, the most important step is the first one: the foundation.
Get that right from the start, and there’s almost no limit to how your home can evolve. You might begin with a single-storey layout for a small family and later expand into a double-storey with five bedrooms — but it all depends on the strength of that initial base.
The same principle applies when building a double-cab for overland travel.

THE DOUBLE-CAB DILEMMA
It doesn’t take much to convince South Africans of the benefits of a double-cab over an SUV. While both platforms serve different needs, a double-cab is hard to beat when it comes to storage capacity and overall load (GVM).
There is, however, one catch.
Without a canopy, a double-cab shifts from being one of the most capable touring platforms available to one of the most impractical. A canopy isn’t an optional extra — it’s a critical component of any overland setup.

YOUR CANOPY IS YOUR FOUNDATION
And much like a foundation, it’s not a decision to rush.
Your canopy sets the tone for your entire build. Choose correctly, and your vehicle can evolve as your needs change. Choose poorly, and you may find yourself limited in terms of accessories, while also dealing with ongoing frustrations like dust ingress, water leaks, cracks, and rattles.
Everything mounts to — or relies on — the canopy: awnings, rooftop tents, shower cubicles, table slides, jerry cans, water storage, recovery gear, and more. While these accessories may change over time, your canopy should remain the constant.

THE BEST CANOPY BRAND TO BUY
Selecting the right canopy requires a long-term view — particularly in terms of versatility and functionality.
While many external, bolt-on accessories like rooftop tents, awnings, and mounting brackets are relatively universal across brands, internal components are often brand-specific. Features like kitchen units, recovery gear compartments, and drop-down storage systems are typically designed for a particular canopy.
Although it’s sometimes possible to fit one brand’s accessory into another’s canopy, the result is often poor fitment and compromised reliability.
For this reason, it’s best to stick with purpose-built accessories designed specifically for a given canopy system. That’s why we often ask customers which internal features matter most to them. If you have your eye on a particular kitchen unit from a specific brand, it makes more sense to choose that canopy from the outset rather than trying to retrofit it later.
If internal accessories aren’t a priority and your focus is more on aesthetics, factors like strength, reliability, and maintenance should still guide your decision.

STRENGTH & WEIGHT
True versatility ultimately comes down to two critical factors: strength and weight. A canopy needs to be strong enough to handle demanding loads and harsh off-road conditions, while remaining light enough to preserve your vehicle’s payload capacity.
An overly heavy canopy limits what you can carry and how you configure your setup — whether that’s adding a rooftop tent or a fully integrated side kitchen.

BUILD QUALITY & RELIABILITY
Build quality plays a major role in long-term ownership. While flat-pack designs may offer advantages in manufacturing and shipping, any system that relies on multiple assembled components introduces potential maintenance needs.
Off-road conditions are unforgiving, and canopy failures are more common than many expect. Cracks, leaks, and fatigue issues often only appear once you’re deep into a trip — when reliability matters most.
That’s why it pays to get this decision right from the start.
